Steve Kornacki analyses The Kentucky Derby Inhumane Blood Sport…

I really feel like “old turtle” would have been a better fit for Mitch, tbh. Aside from the actual evil he does to the world, he gives me strong Dana Carvey as turtle vibes.

♬ And the next thing you know
Your son is playing for money in a pinch-back suit
And listenin’ to some big outta town jasper
Hearin’ him tell about horse race gamblin’ ♫

♬ Not a wholesome trottin’ race, no
But a race where they set down right on the horse
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy
Sittin’ on Dan Patch? Make your blood boil
Well I should say ♫

I read a wonderful old biography of the great pacer Dan Patch.

We were at an estate sale, and I also picked out a lovely horse pin. Mom got a terrific small wooden sculpture from Africa. It looks like a quite charming lion, until you notice a man’s head is sticking out of his mouth

His world record for the mile stood for 50 years.

Not at all bad for a weedy colt with crooked hindlegs, who’d needed help to nurse from his mama.
