This was a job for people with young brains. I remember packing data into limited storage, it was a fun puzzle but a distraction from the main task of making a good program.

Sprite design often utilized ingenuity like that. Nintendo used the same background tiles for clouds and bushes in Super Mario Bros., for example. But Capcom were the masters of just making things work. Street Fighter 2 is a clear example of their puzzle solving ability, especially with a larger size character like Sagat. They really seemed to shine brightly with larger characters. Making the large Wily Fortress bosses work in Mega Man 2 similarly required what was then considered outside of the box thinking.

A great video example of this kind of work is regarding the game Micro Mages for NES. Built in 2018 (I believe), they go through how they fit the entire game into 40kb with some really clever compression and smart sprite usage.
