Switching to Linux, saying goodbye to Apple and Microsoft

Until there’s an actual, functional alternative to Photoshop for my job, I’m stuck with Windows.

No, GIMP is not a functional alternative.

Thanks. Damn. Of course it doesn’t work. But hey it’s worth a shot.

what are you doing that you need photoshop for, as opposed to gimp? i’m a photographer and i’ve been using gimp for almost 5 years now, and i haven’t even considered switching back to adobe…

I think making the assumption that people don’t have other reasons to run another OS is dangerous, especially in this crowd where you have lots of designers, musicians, tech geeks, photographers, and others with needs to run specialized software.

That being said, It has been mentioned that emulation such as wine exists, and that VMs are an option as well. These are things that people wanting to switch to linux but have that one program they have to run, or only have one computer, should consider. (Hell I have 9 VMs on my laptop currently.)

The thing that frustrates me is that every time one of these threads pops up stating that "z"os is a reasonable alternative for commercial software, every special snowflake has to list off the reasons it absolutely can’t work for them, ignoring the fact that there are workarounds, no one told them to ditch their special work related workstations, and the majority of people really honestly could be happy on just about any reasonably designed OS that supports a few basic functions.

(And you, yes you designing the SCADA systems for nuclear power plants. Zip it. I’ve heard enough.)

An AWS virtual private server might be the way to go. You could use a pre-built image with the required services. Not free, but its yours to do as you please.

a new os?
check out haiku, a FOSS clone of beos, so maybe not new, but not a *nix or win.

Sure, Be has been scraping along forever. I mean new new, like newer than new. Original. I don’t know what I mean. Just not BeOS, not win, no mac, not *nix, not VMS, not VX Works, etc. Oh hell, maybe I’ll write my own.

wine doesn’t run triple-a games. and yes, if you’re using extreme pc software, i can’t help you.

let me offer a caveat: if you need to run windows, go right ahead. i’m not a linux nazi.

but, for the average pc user, linux is an extremely reasonable alternative. i’m not talking about specialized string theory BLOW YO MIND software, mind you, but if you need a spreadsheet and plenty of excellent alternatives to corporate disasters from adobe, i’d recommend linux.

I can’t use my main 3d Modeling App in Linux. Or most of the games I play. (Yes, I know about Gimp and Blender, but that doesn’t work for me like Cinema 4d and Photoshop.)
For now, I have to stick with Win7 and keep fixing other people’s windows PC’s…

Comics colouring.

I think we’re both in agreement on this. Realize my initial comment about people on this thread was aimed at you, and it got broader from there. I have stated multiple times in the thread, and once in my response to you that Linux is just fine for most people. (ETA: I run it too.)

Your well reasoned and evidence based argument has convinced me!!

I’m pleased you are happy with Win10 data sharing with Microsoft. Thats your choice. I’m not happy with it… I dont use any Cloud service and I dont want to share my data with MS just becuase Win XP did. This doesnt seem to me like any reason at all.

Now… where is the Win 10 setting for MY personal preference of data security. There isnt one, becuase Microsoft has chosen not to offer me one.

Linux it is then.

I’m pretty sure current Firefox does HTML5 based Netflix playback.

I’m not going to grill you since you said “pretty sure” but does it default to HTML5?

I watch Netflix on my tv so I’d suggest you go try…

Windows only as it turns out.

I think I’ve used netflix all of twice in the last three years. Good to know though.

How do you watch Daredevil and Jessica Jones then?
