Take a look at this insanely huge menu from the Warner Brothers Studio Cafe in 1941

It’s interesting that under specials they use “liberty cabbage” but under cocktails you can order “sauerkraut juice”.

I miss Jerry’s deli

Heard it closed a few years back and I went down to LA 2 weeks ago and drove by very sadly. My grandfather used to wax poetic about his first credit card that he got (which was issued at the smokehouse - another old hollywood establishment)

Canter’s deli in L.A. could probably give them a run for their money. The menu is many pages long and includes a ton of stuff that I never would have expected in a famous Jewish deli, including a BLT on Challah bread, which just seemed incredibly wrong somehow.

(My family drove out there a couple weeks ago on a mission to do some “traditional Jewish stuff” ahead of my son’s bar mitzvah to get him exposed to a little culture. We ended up eating a ton of fish for breakfast which my wife assures me is one of the most Jewish things you can do.)

Not all Jews keep Kosher, and most Jewish delis also server Gentiles, so…

Yeah, I totally get that, and some other non-kosher food items like cheeseburgers weren’t surprising to me. It was the juxtaposition of the bacon with challah bread specifically that was a little jarring, especially since challah isn’t very well-suited for making sandwiches anyway.
