I’ve gotten a couple of refunds over the years, but also have had some denied (since there are exceptions).
The compensation part isn’t automatic, and with some airlines they will try to drag their feet. There are online services that do the process for you in exchange for a percentage of whatever cash you might get (25%? 33% I forget - either way, it’s worth it for me, since I’m way more likely to compensation).
I think those rules are part of the reason why it’s so much nice to fly in Europe.
