Texting driver on cyclist she struck: "I just don't care"

I don’t see that same respect for speed limits here in Canada. Pretty much everyone speeds all the time other than when they’re impeded by other traffic, or have to slow for a curve/corner. There is MUCH less speed enforcement here than Australia, though. Pretty much non-existent in comparison.

Motorists are a courteous bunch here in Vancouver, though. Compared to the average homicidal bogans in Australia, anyway.

As a motorist and cyclist, the homicidal bogans aren’t my biggest worry; they’re relatively rare next to the ocean of nervous Camry drivers who couldn’t drive their way out of a wet paper bag.

The biggest thing lacking on our roads is some sort of concept of traffic flow, but I guess addressing that would involve acknowledging that other people are trying to use the road in addition to one’s own stupid, selfish arse.

If I could have one law enforced, it’d be keep left unless overtaking. The dickheads gather in convoys.

“It took me three tries to hit him, I finally had to open my passenger side door on the final pass” she said in the official report.

Unfortunately I’m pretty sure that regulations for self-driving cars are going to require a “safety” feature that allows the automated driving to be turned off. And you just “know” that the most irresponsible drivers are going to be the ones to turn it off when they’re on the road.

We’re all above-average drivers aren’t we?

I’m not; I’m fucking terrible.

That brings back memories…

Only the children are above-average. But we do have strong women, and good-looking men.

She was driving carefully and attentively; she meant to bowl the cyclist.

Believe she is mentally challenged and a narcissistic. All she cares about is her car. Hope she never climbs on a bike she will be challenging cars.

Hey now. New Zealanders can out-snob those Aussies any day.

Minnesota, huh?

After about 1 am, an awful lot of red lights look like stop signs.

The tagline always plays in my head whenever I hear implausible claims of above-average anything :grinning:

You get lots of insurance money if you lose a big toe. They’re really important for balance. Without them, people tend to fall over.

She needs some scarlet letter type justice. A tattoo on her forehead that reads something like “I’m a terrible human.”[/quote]
It’s called an “E” plate.

Amid mounting pressure from drivers, the DOT decided to start planning for the new lanes last fall. The department sought out input and suggestions from motorists who, according to Peters, “really know how to drive” or simply believed traffic laws to be for “suckers.”

Just for context because it isn’t clear in the article if you don’t know the geography- It is a 20 minute drive and she managed to read and reply to 20 messages to 7 different people in that time. I can barely do that sitting at a desk and drinking a coffee.

Just like with shagging, a lot of mediocre proponents like to kid themselves they’re exceptional.

On the one hand there’s Dunning-Kruger, and on the other it’s the most dangerous activity most of us ever do and has a history steeped in machismo… so there’s that; it’s a prime survival skill.

If you’re familiar with the syndrome mentioned above, you’ll know there are two kinds of folks who will blow their horn - the mistaken, and the correct.

For the same reason the situation is clouded with wankers, it’s kind of important to identify and mitigate actual risks, rather than pressing dumbarse kneejerk buttons.

…I just wish people would grasp the Golden Rule of traffic: stay out of the way.

If most of the motorists out there had spent years cycling with cars before steering one, I bet our congestion problem wouldn’t be half as serious.

…And if everyone spent some time on a forklift, they wouldn’t be so shy of tight gaps, but of course that’s too much to ask. Get a narrower car, you fat fucks. A lower one I can see past, that doesn’t weigh three tons and come with an optional battering ram on the front, farting death from a damn truck dressed as a car.

Got a bit ranty there, but this shit actually matters, quite a bit.

The last time there was a post about cyclists here I was pretty firmly (ok, ragingly) on the anti-cyclist bandwagon. I’ve been striving to pay more attention, and I do notice more ‘good’ cyclists - folks who follow the rules of the road, driving intelligently, courteously and safely. That said, there are still a ton of cyclists who cheerfully run lights and stop signs, speed through pedestrian-only zones, cut vehicles off, ride the wrong way down one-way streets, and on and on. The more responsible members of the cycling community need to acknowledge their bad actors and take steps to reform their community and the non-cycling public’s perception of it, or the hostility and indifference to cyclists will continue. That’s not some sort of moral judgement, just a personal evaluation based on history and human nature.
