The History Guy had a video on this recently, according to a report in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Hitchcock wasn’t directly inspired by the event, the movie is based on a short story from 1957 and the film was already in production by the time the event occurred.

I remember going to see “The Birds” at the Opera House in downtown Boston across the street from the Jordan Marsh department store. Right after the show thousands of starlings were perched on every windowsill of that store. Creeped me right the hell out.
