From BBC article, quoting professor at the University of Cambridge:
"There is no safe level of driving, but the government does not recommend that people avoid driving.
“Come to think of it, there is no safe level of living, but nobody would recommend abstention.”
Red wine i avoid, i can rarely drink a red and feel great later. White wines are not necessarily my jam but i can at least drink them with less trepidation.
Hogwash I say! HOGWASH!
Yeah. I’m not a huge wine fan. So when I have it it tends to just be a glass with dinner.
I do enjoy a glass of port every so often with a cappuccino for dessert, but it’s a rare thing for me.
Generally I have bourbon/rye before dinner. Maybe a martini. Then water through my meal.
Being both of Aboriginal descent, and having grown up in a family where alcohol abuse lead to physical violence regularly, as an adult I have alcohol in my home only for cooking, and refuse to purchase it for guests, as gifts, or what-have-you.
I can and do appreciate the culinary principles around many types of alcohol, but to me, it exists in the same vein as weaponry or fast cars. Use should be restricted and moderated, and irresponsible use should be penalized with maximum possible effect.
It’s not that studies are funny things. It’s the lack of scrutiny of the media that reports on them and your friends that repost articles about studies that promote their unhealthy lifestyle. As a result, we get apathy and cynicism toward studies.
This looks to be a rather well done study. And the fact that it starts with this:
"Historically, researchers have relied on self-reported survey data to estimate consumption levels and trends. However, these data have systematic biases that make cross-country comparisons unreliable. "
is promising.
The claims are not outrageous by any means.
If I may, you seem to have a poorly-chosen user name.
My dad’s side of the family is of Irish descent, they emigrated to Venezuela and they all have a history of alcoholism and physical/mental abuse. My dad was the black sheep of the family because he grew up watching the alcoholism and refused to touch a drop of it. Only within the last 5 years or so he’s drank a little bit of wine and lambic fruit beers on the very rare occasion but he doesn’t like to drink and avoids it.
I do drink more regularly but i have always made it a point to not drink as a negative coping mechanism.
That’s why the saying goes “pick your poison” instead of “pick your well-balanced nutritional supplement.”
At least on this point, the science is clear. You’re not drinking alone if the TV’s on.
I disagree.
I think it’s the fact that new studies often contradict old studies. If you look at the studies I linked to in my post, some were directly from the NIH; I found all of those in about five seconds of googling. For pretty much any food item or lifestyle choice, a quick search will uncover studies telling you that it’s either unhealthy or benefits your health, depending on the year.
By no means do I disagree with this study. I’m sure alcohol isn’t a particularly healthy lifestyle choice. I’m sure if I was a scientist behind this study, I’d be really angry about previous much-ballyhooed studies encouraging moderate alcohol consumption.
Mandelorian Death Watch might be the best name for a mixed drink ever.
I’m part Native American, but based on family history, it is the Czech side that has people who can’t handle their booze.
My dad was what some people call a “beer-a-holic” until one day he just quit. His dad I know as in AA, and at least one of his brothers should be.
TV will never leave me, right?
Sounds like it would kick the shit out of Romulan Ale.
The CDC also released new guidelines today regarding childhood obesity. Taking a cue from the “zero alcohol” approach the most reliable way to combat weight gain is simply to stop feeding your kids. Look, we just solved two major worldwide health issues with the same simple approach!
Every study that you linked to was an article about the study not the study itself. So the misinformation is not from the studies but from those who are reporting on it.
It’s much better to make a click bait headline than to actually validate the study and decide, you know what, this is crap let’s not write an article about it.
You sure someone isn’t slipping you anabuse?
But wouldn’t compare to a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster
That is untrue. Three of the articles I posted were indeed articles about the study, while one was a direct link to the actual study. Please don’t lie.
Coming up short on the number of fucks I have to give about this report. I will continue to drink quality ales and fine single malt scotch for as long as I’m capable of lifting a glass.
After that, I’ll be asking for it to be delivered via IV…
