This point was raised by Missouri Rep. Cori Bush, who, according to Politico, is someone House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said was outside of Democrats’ party line on police.
“With all due respect, Mr. President. You didn’t mention saving Black lives once in this speech,” Bush posted on Twitter. “All our country has done is given more funding to police. The result? 2021 set a record for fatal police shootings. Defund the police. Invest in our communities.”
The State of the Union’s bipartisan moment of joy over funding police and emphasis of the perspective of police over those killed by police comes less than two years after the so-called racial reckoning of 2020. That summer, Pelosi and other Democratic leaders knelt in kente cloth in Emancipation Hall, in a show of “support” for Black lives. But that’s the Democrats for you: all optics, no substance.
What actually creates community safety? To critics of criminal justice reform, not police, who only reportedly solve roughly 2% of serious crimes, who claim persecution despite the fact that, as the president of the United States proudly mentioned in his speech, they received $350 billion from Biden’s American Rescue Plan to hire more cops in 2021. As Teen Vogue has reported, many in the media are in on the machine, with constant headlines in major papers lamenting that a “crime wave” has overcome American cities, and running statements from politicos that slot the blame towards “defund.”
It’s easy to share dramatic-sounding stats about rising murder rates. But it’s more important to note that, as The Guardian reported last summer, “The homicide increase isn’t happening at random.” Instead, “much of the additional violence is clustered in disadvantaged neighborhoods of color that were already struggling with higher rates of gun violence before the pandemic.” Giving the police more money doesn’t help these communities or address the gun violence epidemic.
Here’s a look at some of the numbers:
-
Overall approval rating jumped to 47% , up 8 points from the NPR poll last month. Presidents don’t generally see much, if any bounce, out of a State of the Union address. Since 1978, there had only been six times when a president saw an approval rating improve 4 points or more following State of the Union addresses, according to the pollsters. Three of those bounces were for former President Bill Clinton.
-
Ukraine handling is up 18 points to 52%.
-
Coronavirus pandemic handling is now 55%, up 8 points.
-
Economic handling up 8 points to 45%.

There’s some truth here that uncle Joe has outmaneuvered Putin masterfully and has been completely underestimated.
I’d already forgotten about revealing the intel on false flag operations. It was a genius move that removed any legitimacy Putin might have claimed.

Thanks, i didn’t know that either.
(Still don’t get why any Fux “News” propagandists are allowed in that room. Let alone allowed to ask questions.)
Probably…
God that’s unsurprising (for Texas) but enraging.
My thoughts exactly. Wanna bet this is the same sort of facility envisioned to handle the trans “victims” of suppotive families? That’s where my thoughts went immediately.
" Dozens of facilities contracted by Texas have recently closed down or had their license revoked after racking up numerous offenses and subjecting children to dangerous and damaging environments. Child advocates and the judge have repeatedly criticized Texas officials for failing to ensure facilities are safe for kids in the state’s care. From summer 2019 to May 2021, the court monitors discovered that at least 23 children died in Texas’ long-term foster care system in shelters and facilities licensed by the state."
Our leaders have failed us now for more than generation. But all they care about is staying in power to kill more kids and fail us some more. They probably will too because 20% of the population doesn’t care so long as they get to see public lynchings again, and a good chunk of those folk basically support some form of slavery. Texas, y’all.
