Hey, this is when I get to talk about how Apple’s latest Mac designs are a great metaphor for cost externalization again.
Apple loves to have sleek, simple, minimalist designs with no clutter or big ugly ports. But that means that if you want to do anything with your MacBook you need to outsource the relevant functionality to an even bigger, even clunkier dongle. The MacBook itself has low ugliness (i.e., low cost) only because it’s foisted the ugliness onto objects outside its borders. The inelegance of different ports and fittings is all still there, it’s just not immediately apparent on the Mac itself – the ugliness cost has been externalized.
“Ugliness externalization” I love that concept !
