The reference to Thrifty Drugstores in the tag has me craving some ice cream.
I don’t know if that’s intentionally sarcastic, but it could certainly be read that way. Not having to turn things on and off can be a real boon to the lives of older people.
There seem to be a lot of geriatrics in commercials from the 80s that are permanently burned into my brain: this one, the Life Call commercial (“I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up!”), and the Wendy’s “Where’s the beef?” commercial.
Interesting to see that the sensitivity of the clapper had to be dialed in. It required users to read the manual

So roughly 33% of the utility of an Alexa box, without the creepy spying or need for an internet connection or smart bulbs/plugs. I can see why it’s still around.
