I think the closest thing to Sweden’s fermented herring is Garum, a commonly used condiment used in the Roman Empire, the making of which is similar to the fish sauce of modern south-east Asia.

FD: I love herring, whether pickled with onions or in sour cream… but not so much that I’d risk stepping into surströmming.
