Adult flies don’t eat that much. A lot of the time, flies aren’t landing on your food to eat it at all. They are looking for places suitable for larvae and trying to attract mates.
While we’re talking about the front legs, the legs are full of chemoreceptors that are used to taste what they land on. The legs are covered in tiny hairs. So like someone with a soup-strainer moustche, they need to regularly groom the legs so they aren’t still tasting food from the previous meal
