So there are two different families getting mixed up here.
- Diodontidae (porcupinefish) are spiny, and very tough fish, but they don’t have tetrodotoxin.
- Tetraodontidae (puffers proper) usually have tetrodotoxin but not spines.
I mean, they’re closely related and maybe it doesn’t matter much. But I feel like they get confused a lot and it takes away from appreciating the diversity, where they have found different ways of using inflation as a defense.
