Anyone who is a fan of this sort of thing should track down a copy of Mrs Byrne’s Dictionary of Unusual, Obscure, and Preposterous Words. Which is exactly what the title suggests. It’s long out of print, but lots of copies are out there in used book stores.

For example, saying ‘he cray cray’ like an ophthalmologist to one’s demerit; “He has acrasia.”

Thanks for this! I didn’t know “acrasia” but it seems perfectly cromulent to me.

I only knew “valetudinarian” because I’ve long been one.
