ADIEU LEAST STARE STAGE STAKE STATE
Wordle 988 5/6*
FROTH SALTY SPATE SKATE STATE
An interesting observation on today’s solution:
there are six solutions to STA?E. If you tried all six you would have the largest possible number of green squares and still win (25)
For the combination SHA?E there are seven solutions. If you are unlucky you could play the largest number of green squares that results in a loss (24)
As far as I can tell, there are eight solutions to STA?E: STAKE, STAGE, STARE, STALE, STAVE, STANE, STADE and of course, STATE.
I was lucky that, by the time I got to my third guess, my first two words had already eliminated some of the possible solutions (STAKE, STARE and STALE), plus I also remembered that about a year ago, STAGE had already been used. So, there were four possible solutions left. But at the time, I could only think of two and I am happy I played the right one.
Too bad I didn’t remember that STALE had already been a solution back in 2022, I just checked this.
In any case, I don’t like Wordle solutions that rely too much on luck, but according to the Wordle editor, those kind of words are important to have in the game.
STANE and STADE I felt would fall under the too-obscure rule.
Thanks for the article. She mentioned a word in February that would be hard. I expect that was the cause of my downfall a week or so ago. At least I like to think so

Anyone try the newest NYT word game, just out today in beta: ”Strands” ?
NYT Wordle editor, Tracy Bennett, wrote:
Strands is the newest addition to the New York Times suite of games, and its public beta version starts today! Strands is a multidirectional word-search puzzle with an extra twist: The puzzle has a daily theme that completely fills the grid, including a special theme-defining word called a “spangram.”
(Once I had the first word, I thought it was a little too easy… I’ll try it a few more times, though, before I decide if I like it or not…)
(May need a subscription? idk)

TRACE SHLEP BLAME FLAME
Hmmm, seems pretty good. Not sure if I’ve got the correct pattern yet. I tried a bunch of words before hitting on a correct one, which made the rest easy. But maybe I’m supposed to hunt for the spanngram first.
Another one where you have to get most of the word straight away otherwise you’ll run out of chances.
I didn’t.

ADIEU CLOUT SNUCK PUNCH BUNCH MUNCH

Wordle 990 6/6*
I wasn’t going to DRINK this MONTH, but my LUNCH BUNCH was having PUNCH, so I tried it on a HUNCH (that the “punch” would not be coming from anchovy paste )
Wordle 990 X/6*
Wordle youre just being fucking annoying now
Players focused on eliminating letters are not going to try HUNCH until they’ve tried every other _UNCH possibility.
Five combinations, four chances. I don’t like it.

My early guesses ruled out LUNCH and MUNCH, so that helped. (Didn’t even think of BUNCH yet!)
