Do jump scares simply not work if someone tells you it’s going to happen?
I’m not sure I’d read the original when I read the Carmen Maria Machado book!
It did seem to be referencing something naggingly familiar though. Mind you, I don’t think I knew some of the stories that Angela Carter referenced either when I read her revisions of myth and fairytales. Still loved them because, even if you didn’t explicitly know the sources, they were still naggingly familiar and tugging at the back of your mind.
