Even when America’s relation with other countries had been at its worst, it was the Globetrotters who were the most successful US ambassadors, and with Curly always as the engaging frontman. I haven’t checked, but YT may have vids up of the Globetrotters playing a Soviet team, perhaps from the 70s or 80s.
The first time I ever heard of the Harlem Globetrotters was from watching Scooby Doo:
I never got to see them in person, but was glad to catch an exhibition game on TV in the 70s.
I also had a paperback book detailing the history of the Harlem Globetrotters I received from the Scholastic Book Club. One of my favorite non-fiction books as a kid.
I remember seeing him/them in person in Fresno, CA, in the early 1970s. My husband got to meet Curly Neal when he was selected by him for the audience participation skit during the same time period, albeit 2,700 miles away in Philadelphia.
RIP Curly
I probably read that book too. It was very cool.
Me too! And IIRC, Curly was one of the ones on the cartoon!
I did end up catching some games on TV. Super fun to watch.
Curly was always my favorite.
Got to meet him once when I was running a TV camera for a sports reporter doing a feature on Curly making a charity appearance in a nearby town. He was wonderfully friendly and cool, and getting to meet him was the lifelong dream I never knew I had.
And I met him lots of times in cartoons, which isn’t really the same thing, I guess.
I remember watching this guy when I was just the right age, it was unforgettable, the city police and fire department had a friendly rivalry going strong thus they combined forces to battle the globe trotters and were humbled. Trounced, it was bliss, I and everyone laughed till we cried and never forgot the spectacle.
First time for me was their cartoon
When I saw the Globetrotters Curly Neal shot free throws in his “moonball” style. Only person to make a 15-foot shot that travelled 50 feet to get to the rim.
The Generals must be thinking they’ll finally have a shot.
Curly was a fixture of positivity in my early childhood. RIP.
Curly was awesome. I got to see them play when they came through Detroit back in the 70’s and as kid I was in awe of these guys. Tried to get Curly’s autograph but ended with Larry “Gator” Rivers instead which was good enough for me. Godspeed Curly.
