The headquarters of Mussolini's Italian Fascist Party, 1934

Call it The Soul of Man under Trumpism, perhaps.

From Bertolucci’s Conformista, such an uplifting vision of human possibility ho hum…

Nowadays, the more overt symbols of such rampant psychopathy involve enormous buildings filled with downtrodden wage-slaves and escaping justice for sexual assault and fraud.

I suspect that it’s the same illness, we’ve just come along in our resistance to such.

Looks like it’s unseasonably warm in DC as a crowd already begins to gather at the entrance to the Trump inauguration ceremony.

Yeah. I’m a fan. There’s many examples surviving in Italy.

There was a war between two schools of Italian Fascist architects - the modernists and the Roman revivalists. Mussolini ended up favoring the latter, which is certainly a blot on his record of governance.

Hey, the Trump Building also has one of the key styling features of Italian Modernist Fascist architecture - the line of squares making up the multiple equal entrances. That’s weird because I always though of this feature as egalitarian - the multiple entrances indicating the building is open and the equality of the entrances implying the people entering are all equal.

Anyone interested in this should watch Jonathan Meades’ documentary on Mussolini’s architecture:

The voting forms weren’t even secret. There were two forms, the no one was plain white paper and this is the yes one.

The Nazis also made it clear which was the “correct” way to vote
