The largest insect that ever lived, the Dragonfly-like Meganeuropsis, had a wingspan of 28"

I met this little fella down on the Japanese island of Iriomote (waaaay south of Okinawa):

He was about a foot long, and apparently packs a nasty bite. The rest of my hiking group had ducked under the branch, most of them putting a hand on it for support, before I pointed out what they nearly shook hands with… :wink:

I just want a giant pet dragonfly. Looking for any sort of excuse. Honestly would expect these guys to not even notice mosquitos. Maybe they’d eat small birds if they were somehow able to live today?
