The most underrated movies of the 21st century

Great horror scene. Not for the squeamish

Yes and i’m going to add A Scanner Darkly to this list and i always will because it is criminally underrated and overlooked frequently on such lists.

With regard to Annihilation, i was sad to see they didn’t include the pit (or is it a tower) as the thing to be investigated but that might have made for a more static film.

I’d probably have to add Ben Wheatley’s unhinged High-Rise as well.

Are these really underrated? I believe nearly all of these were very, very well received. Underrated would be if they received a poor critical and/or audience reception, and perhaps they deserve reevaluation.

It’s not very much like the book, but it is a good movie and the visuals are utterly extraordinary.

I saw Annihilation. I thought was ok to good. It definitely wasn’t great. It felt to me like it was just trying to be weird for the sake of being weird, rather than trying to tell a good, but weird, story.

Huge fan of Annihilation, which is a great pairing with another underrated film, “Under the Skin.”

I’ll also pitch in for Scanner Darkly, which had the best possible casting that film could have, and High Rise, which is deliciously dark.

My pick: Mandy, a movie that pretends to be a Fridge/Revenge movie, but is so much more. Heartbreaking. While also being a genre fridge/revenge movie. I will talk for hours about this.

This is mostly just an excuse to talk about movies we liked. Doesn’t need to be more complicated than that.

I enjoyed Big Fan with Patton Oswalt. It’s a very interesting character study. One doesn’t need to be a sports fan at all to enjoy it. I watch games but really don’t get the culture of it and I think being a little outside of fandom makes his choices considerably bleaker.

Since I didn’t notice it mentioned in the write up, Perfume is based on this novel

I haven’t seen the film, but can recommend the novel. Visceral and creepy and tons of interesting facts about the science of scent (at least the old-school science). And the ending! What a splash!

If you liked the books just don’t bother with the film.

It fails to convey any of the deepest wierd the books contained…

One of the tiny cadre where the film was (heaps) better than the book.

Annihilation was crap, nothing happened, there was no resolution, no answers it was just one of them artsey films, that artsey people like, that are supposed to make you question your self, but in reality are just half finished storeys…

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

It is always shocking to me how few people have even heard of it.

The critics loved it, but nobody saw it

That film was excellent.

I’d also mention Valhalla Rising.

Critics largely dismissed it as macho violence porn in the 300 mold. Which makes me wonder if they watched the same movie I did. It did practically nothing at the box office, and ran in only 1 or 2 theaters.

It’s a slow, quiet, frightening movie in the Werner Herzog mode, with folklore threaded subtly throughout. The cast is amazing, it’s incredibly well shot. And everything else Nicolas Winding Refn has made got squeals, despite being right in line with this one. I still scratch my head that it got the reaction it did.

Evertime we see lists like this the wife and I decide we’re going to watch some of them. We sit down and decide to watch one and then we fall asleep.

We’ll look over the list and try again but I don’t have high hopes.

We’ve been wanting to watch Together Together but that’s not working out well.

We did make it through The Starling a few weeks ago.

I haven’t seen the whole movie, but I have enjoyed a number of the songs from the soundtrack - Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Makes me cry every time.

ETA: And all of the music is played with period-accurate instruments, too.

I think this is underrated.

Assuming we are sticking with English language stuff as it seems to be.

6/10 on IMDb. But critically it’s not it seems 100% on Rotten tomatoes and 62% audience. So I guess it didn’t really find an audience which is a shame.
