The Ongoing Gallery of Trump-Inspired Assholes

The same false logic the South had before the Civil War. They think because they can grow food it means they are self-sufficient. A couple of years later they’re going to wonder where they can get a cell phone, a banana, or insulin.

“I was on a Zoom call the other day and I said, ‘I’m like a dog with a bone. I will not let them end this session without changing some of these laws,’ “ O’Lenick said. “They don’t have to change all of them, but they’ve got to change the major parts of them so that we at least have a shot at winning.”

Amazing that they can’t resist just admitting their shit right out in the open. It isn’t “so the elections will be fair”, or “so we can make sure the people who get the most votes actually win.” It’s “so we can make sure that those voters least likely to vote for us have the most difficult time voting for the opposition.”

I mean, does it really look like Republicans have a hard time winning elections in the US?

Well, they often win because they’ve been engaged in quite a bit of voter suppression over the years, going back to Reagan… Now the pre-clearance is gone, they will amp that shit up to about 1000, unless a new voters rights act is passed by congress.

From the back seat of cab? Does Uber operate in Russia?

I am baffled why that is not priority one in this administration. After all the shit thrown in this past election, a new Voting Rights Act has got to be passed and signed into law ASPAP.

Same for making movement on statehood for US territories and DC.

Aren’t a lot of the problematic parts of elections in the hands of the states, though? They may have reservations about it too, because a large percentage of the population thinks they stole the election. To immediately start imposing federal will on the states election procedures might not be tactically sound to get a lot accomplished in the long run.

A task force is in order, it should be a big priority, of course, but probably the things that can be done instantly through Presidential mandate would be the big first push. Putting out all of Trump’s Imperial Decree wildfires before they cause more pain and suffering would be the fastest benefit.

Everything else will take exhaustive slog with Congress and the states themselves.

Statehood is not a majority vote issue, is it? We could get a voting rights act passed 51-50. I don’t think (but not sure) that we could get statehood the same way. Anybody know this for sure?

Simple majority.

Well, cool then! Yes, add that as #1a!

Anything to avoid running on policies that actually appeal to a broad section of voters I guess.

Agreed, but I do think they have a bit more time on that issue as opposed to the Pandemic, rolling back various immigration acts, and putting some environmental regulations.

I do think that members of Congress have this as their priority, after additional relief.

Part of why we made progress was the pre-clearance provision of the voting rights act, which forced states with a history of voter suppression to get any voting laws cleared by the Justice department. That’s what SCOTUS gutted recently, and a similar provision needs to be implemented in a new voting rights act.

Right? If what you are offering voters isn’t popular, maybe it’s time to rethink your policies. Although since Trump, the GOP doesn’t seem to have any.

Yes - plus the Prez.

But the territory generally needs to want to become a state- and draft a new state constitution that gets submitted to Congress and gets approved.

Pretty sure DC wants to be a state- still unclear if Puerto Rico does.
