The only good "Q" is a Star Trek "Q"

Oh, I like Q a lot and the story arch that humanity is on trial (we should be on trial). There were very few episodes that I didn’t like of the TNG (usually those with Alexander…not a fan of the little guy).

I would call Q a rascal more than a dick. That was my husband’s first reaction, but even he has affection for Q.

I recently started watching this longplay of Star Trek: Borg, an old-timey “interactive movie” that appears to amount to a good 99 minutes of de Lancie doing his best shtick. (There does not appear to be much to be gained by actually playing the game directly.)

More recently, there’s his performance as Discord in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which might as well just be Q all over again. But I never followed that beyond his introduction at the start of Season 2, long, long ago.

Another reminder how dumb the premise was for the later movie Star Trek: Insurrection. They had already solved aging by accident, why would the Federation commit genocide (or forced relocation, I forget and won’t watch it again) against the inhabitants of a planet just to be free to harvest their special anti-aging rays?

(Yeah, I know. As always, the answer is “so the movie can happen.”)

I was shocked, shocked i tell ya, to see such negativity toward Q in here, i always thought he was generally well loved. I like him but i admit that he never really worked outside of TNG because he doesn’t have Picard to play off of and that’s where the magic happens.

You don’t try to out-Shakespeare Picard.

But saying that, the time when Sisko decked him is still gold.

I think Janeway probably gets the trophy for “Starfleet Captain who has the least amount of patience for Q’s nonsense.” Consider: she knew full well that Q had the power to return her ship and crew back to the Alpha quadrant with a snap of his fingers and she didn’t even lower herself to ask.

I just realised that DeLancie has a certain Robert Preston quality. He would be great to play Centauri (or a similar character) in the “Last Starfighter” sequel.

So you missed 99 percent of TNG, all of DS9, all of the movies after IV, and more?

There were 178 episodes of TNG and Q appeared partway through episode 1, so more like 99.8%. I’m sure they’re well qualified to judge when the series jumped the shark though.

Well, the meta keeps this on topic, I’d argue:

I love Sisko’s sense of boredom with Q – almost like a “whatever, I just met you and I’m already so done with you.”

Some of Stewart’s best acting.

Well, Sisko did end up being one of those timeless wormhole people.

Hello. Goodbye. Hello. Goodbye.

It’s not the good old Q, but this series also has a character that arouses love and hate in the hearts of the fans.
