“While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”
The academy’s board of governors met Wednesday to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violations against the group’s standards of conduct. The academy said Smith has the opportunity to defend himself in a written response before the board meets again on April 18. The academy said disciplinary action for Smith could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

He knew that white people weren’t gonna let it go… And he does seem genuinely contrite about what he’s done… But once again, there were greater consequences for a slap than raping a child. It’s really sad in that we prioritize institutions over children. But that should not surprise us, given the state of the GOP lately. A not insignificant portion of our country is okay with crimes against children, especially certain children, as long as white people never have to feel uncomfortable. It really boggles my mind that we’ve come to the place we are in this country and how nothingburger events like this can drive white people insane. I really don’t understand other white people anymore, I truly don’t.
