Oh man, memories! I had one of these from Radio Shack in the late 70s, just to mess around with (actually, probably still have it somewhere). Five bucks or so if I recall. Never knew it was used in video games, makes sense though.

Did the same thing myself. I hooked them up with tiny dip switches and potentiometers, carefully implementing every control so that I could generate the full range of endlessly interesting sounds that, unforseeably, everyone around me thought was like pouring acid into their ears. Good times.
