According to the article, these are guidelines more than firm rules. There’s heaps of albums in there that don’t comply.

When Steal This Album! came out, appropriately, there was a bunch of eBay sellers who seemed to get away with burning a copy and selling it in a jewel case. Approximating (but not too closely) the look of the real CD.

Tipper is always thinking about explicit content.

BTW thanks Tipper for creating a label to help fuel more sales of “porno rock” and other music that you personally did not approve of.

That’s how you knew you got the good release, and not some Walmart bullshit.

As always, I must remind everyone that Al Gore was once effing HOT

“We want you to express yourself…unless we don’t like how you’re expressing yourself.”

On that note…

  • No misleading or generic cover art (for example, prominently depicting or referencing an artist who does not perform on the album).

I guess that means this is out:

  • No blurry, pixelated, tilted, or cropped images unless intended.

Like they did with this album cover?

  • No images from other copyright holders without written permission.

Well that sure excludes a whole truckload of album covers right there.

What about people who use brand names as part of their nom de plume?

  • No year or dates.

I guess this is out:

  • No references to pricing (for example, “Reduced Price,” “Low Price,” or “For Promo Use”).

Well, shit.
