The police, an open door, and probable cause

As a former friend who was also a police officer told us one lovely summer afternoon as we sat around and drank a few beers and smoked Kim said, :never forget, we are basically the biggest legal gang on the planet’, with exception to soldiers (as some might argue but I did not) , and he went on to say tread lightly and always be nice, avoid contact and any interaction with cops as much as you can. Having grown up in Canada, and near a rather rough part of the city all kinds of similar stories. All kinds. I was once pulled over by 2 extremely over aggressive and scary behaving cops while drinking a big bottle of water on my way to the gym. They approached the car with extreme prejudice and it showed in their body language and speech. I will let you imagine the rest. I was frightened. They claimed my vehicle description was sought in a hit and run or some theft, again, this was 15+ yrs back or so, and had guns in hand, which is totally illegal here. Cops do great work. they keep us safe at night, as my retired Dad says, without them, the streets would be littered with bodies, ok. Fine. But we are all human, and humans have the potential to be genuine dumb asses and make poor decisions. A water bottle I later learnt was probable cause ~ many many alcoholics and I filled them with Vodka and rum n Coke when I was younger and attended concerts, games etc… where money was tight. I did not harm, just saved $100 those drinking days. K, Rest in peace pal,(was only a mere 27y/o.) also went on to speak to us of stories he heard from his Staff Sarge about this exact type of run in and it always ended up bad. Boy do I have some stories, this pocket of Toronto has a few.

Yea, in the U.K. , it would have ended worse.

I too wanted to comment on the writing itself (aside from expressing thanks for the story itself). Maggie is one excellent writer.

I think you won this thread.

I don’t know how big your house is but $14,000 in 2004 got AC for my duplex. I just had them put in central AC and leave the hot water boiler for the heat. They put the unit in the attic and then it was easier to run ducts to every room on the second floor and then ducts through the bedroom closets to the first floor. easier than I though and greatly improved quality of life and electrical expense. Removing the window units got me my windows back and no more noise. Besides quality of life the AC helped get me a better price for my house when I sold it.
