And Pooh clearly has an eating disorder that sometimes makes him too fat to exit Rabbit’s home. And Rabbit himself has weird fetish about treating Pooh like an inanimate object to hold his towels. A lot of messed up animals in the Hundred Acre Woods. And all of them seem to be in some weird cult that has a human boy Christopher Robin as their messiah.
But No Elephants! by Jerry Smath is(was) a favorite of my kids 'cause I got to do voices for them.
Wondering if Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shell Silverstien would entertain the parent or the kids more. Kept me entertained while reading a few quick poems out before bed…
One of my favorites is “All The World” by Liz Garton Scanlon, illustrated by Marla Frazee.
I love the language, the way characters are interwoven through the story. How a normal day runs and not everything is perfect.
I love Frazee’s illustrations in this and other books. There’s always representations of gay/lesbian couples and racial diversity. Not front and center just as normal parts of life.
I read it whenever my now 3.75yo will let me.
Virtually all of Shel Silverstein’s books of poetry are winners, but for the love of Zogg, do not read The Giving Tree to your child or anyone else’s.
Sorry, friend, but no still a fun book though
Yes! We are big fans of “TOOT” and “POTTY.”
Reading aloud is one of the things I miss the most now that my daughter is in high school.
I assume the answer is “carefully.”
My 2.5 years old daughter enjoys the books in this series: https://www.waterstones.com/booklist/377114/little-people-big-dreams-series
They should be right up Boingboing’s alley. We have the ones about Rosa Parks and Rudolf Nureyev for now, and my daughter loves them both, but there are many more I want to get. I recommend reading them first for yourself though because some of these life stories are too tough for very small children i.m.o., like Anne Frank as the most obvious example.
Exactly! Ours loves pointing out how unhappy the pets look. A dino can be a kid, but they shouldn’t yell around the cat!
When my oldest son was a baby, I tried to sing him a lullaby at a desperate moment and the only song that came to mind was Runnin’ With The Devil.
Don’t forget “Be Quiet Mike”. Kid monkey builds his own drum set.
I would have done Metallica’s “Enter night”, using the baby as a guitar, but it was 2 AM, I have NO personal volume control, and my indoor speaking voice is naturally stuck at 90 decibels.
Singing that one at 2AM would have earned me spousal decapitation, or worse. At those hours I do not expect my wife to sing along.
As others have already mentioned, Sandra Boynton board books, the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems.
An all-time favorite: Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett. It’s a keeper.
Mom gave away one of my fave hardcover children’s books. I remember neither title nor author, and my many long internet searches have provided no joy. Our Hero is a deranged vulture (can’t remember his name, either) who, upon finding some eggs, realizes he immediately requires a nest in which he can incubate and hatch them. He leaps into his 1920s-looking racing car, and goes tearing around with his buddy the rabbit, who has a nest map. One nest is being used by an artist, probably a mole, who has filled it with paint. Another is occupied by a mother critter and her offspring, etc etc. I think he and his friends finally built a nest in his racing car, and turtles hatched from the eggs. Musta been pub’d in the late 60s - V early 70s, since the story’s so wonderfully mad; had it been later it would’ve been too young for me (1966 vintage), and the artwork is pretty psychedelic.
When the kiddie winkie’s a little older, I Like You - written by Sandol Stoddard Warburg & illustrated by Jacqueline Chwast - is a classic. The blurb V accurately states, “Here is the book that Romeo would have given Juliet, Charlie Brown would have given Snoopy, and you can give to some very special friend. This special book expresses the true meaning of friendship in a long list of ways with charming accompanying illustrations.” I still love it so much, I even gave copies to all my good friends as Valentine’s Day gifts in the mid '90s.
Truer woids was never typed.
The Book With No Pictures! by B J Novak. https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Book_with_No_Pictures.html?id=xJQxAwAAQBAJ
That is easily one of my favorite episodes of that show.
omg I had forgotten about Rainbow Fish.
Rainbow Fish SUPER sucks.
