"The Substance"— an incredible, indelible, and viscerally inedible film I loved and will never watch again

Speaking as a white cis-male…I find it hard to say I enjoyed it. Rather I appreciated it very much. It gave me a great deal to think about regarding how women are portrayed and treated, especially by the entertainment industry.

Yes, it is grotesque and very violent body horror, but there was a scene close to the end that made me think, from my own very limited perspective (see above) this film actually showed great restraint in the way it portrayed the psychological toll of being a woman in an industry where appearance is everything. Or, to put it another way, you can’t make a subtle critique of something that’s already not subtle.
