I worked in North Beach for many a year, the Little Italy of San Francisco. The much missed and departed Herb Caen would wander in once in a blue moon and have an afternoon snack. I got saddled up along side Herb and asked him who’s his favorite author, in a row he said Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Armistead Maupin, and Charles Bukowski, and pointed out in no particular order. I’d read Maupin and Bukowski, but never heard of Celine, so I got busy reading Celine, and what a punch in the gut it was, try it, but be ready for the hard core, it’s a doozy.
