The world recoils as Turkey's president steals dictatorial powers (but Trump congratulates him)

As a aside, how do you get that accented g in Erdogan? Or is it a unusually literate side effect of auto-correct?

I had a friend from Germany staying with me during all of this, and that was her exact point: a significant number of ex-pats in France and Germany joyfully voted “yes” on this.

I see you haven’t read @s2redux’s unauthorized biography of our 31st President…

Maybe it was all of them, even Donald Trump… especially Donald Trump!

International keyboards online. I prefer lexilogos.com. Or, in my phone, i hold down the g and select ğ.

Bookmarked, but Erdogan isn’t worth the effort

I was listening to the BBC News Hour on public radio right after this, and they said basically, “Well, that happened. So far the only ones to congratulate him are dictators and kings.” And then shortly after, “Breaking news, Trump called him too.” :rage:

It is a very long story involving a dependency in Ruby.

I recommend copying and pasting it out of the preview pane ™

Belgium: 75%
Austria: 73,2%
Netherlands: 71%

I guess not having to live with the consequences of hideous authoritarian rule makes it easier to vote for it.
Also, merely living in a country that is liberal, secular and respects the rule of law doesn’t mean that you will support these values, even as you’re benefiting heavily from them. Massive hypocrisy is one of those universal human traits.

From what I understand, they didn’t really get what the referendum was about, only that by voting “yes” they would be poking Europe in the eye. Vague resentment as a prime motivator.

Not only that.
Don’t forget the effect after past coup in Turkey.
Erdoğan vs Gülen sentiment. And the split between diverse groups.

As I have seen in the Netherlands, by demonstrations and (public) intimidation (schools for example), a lot of social pressure.

Birds of a feather…

I just cut and paste it from elsewhere. I’m sure there is probably some sort of way to do it, but that’s how I’ve managed it.

Those are Turkish ex-pats who voted for the referendum? It’s also most they live in countries where they are subject to discrimination based on their ethnicity.

Erdoğan = Erdoğan

Gosh, we’ve never seen that sort of thing over here in the States!
