Family photos are near-totemic objects. Physically cutting out an estranged arsehole from one of them is a powerful and visceral act.

Of course there are other, less salubrious, versions of this played out on the political stage

When my Grandmother’s memory started failing, snipping out all the faces she didn’t recognize in the family albums was one of her symptoms.
