The shell can’t help them survive high heat, because they’re slow and can’t exit a hot spot quickly. So, it isn’t heat armor. More likely it’s that their diet includes metals, and they’ve figured out how to use the metals as a (superior) building material.

just to nitpick, but FeS and FeS2 aren’t metals but salts/minerals. so no iron shells on these snails. Metal as hell they are though.
