In my cellphone’s case, that’s exactly true.
No way. The handshake was the best part! The faster the modem, the more interesting the connection sound was.

I set the handshake sound as the default ringtone on my cell phone. Nearly always gets good reactions from folks who hear it.

I wonder if we went back and looked at old magazines and such, we’d find evidence that many people found the sound annoying at the time?
I could whistle and it would register as connected. The best really was mom picking up the phone in the other room while we were BBSing, which would not in and of itself disconnect us. However, her screaming “SORRY!” into the phone accomplished this every time.

Makes me nostalgic - I kind of miss connecting with people over the internet rather than connecting with information overload.
