I feel like I got a metal version of this from Harbor Freight (or similar) gajillennia ago. One problem the metal one had is that if the tines bend the whole thing is pretty much useless, but other than that I think it’s probably likely to have a better service life than a plastic one with a little care.

Plastic can outlive metal.

This. And with the plastic, the tines will likely snap instead of bend- one or two missing will still give a good read on most pipes
