It does make for a good visual. I’m just lazy
I’m sure that rent for the sleeping pods will not be unreasonable, just priced to keep up with inflation in the local cryptocurrency, same as the company store and cafeteria.
I wonder how an unhappy staff member could leave the island. I suppose one could suck up to a billionaire enough to get a position as a personal servant or crew on their yacht, then jump ship in Nassau and figure out a way to cut off one’s tracking bracelet. Of course, with only a Blue Estate private passport and no money, the cost of freedom might be high indeed.
Billion dollar homes? I dub thee “Supervillain Island”
I just remembered this show:
No reason why /s
I only watched the first season, but I might approve this approach to get onto the island. It’s highly competitive, and you’re sterilized as a condition of entry. Only mega-billionaires need apply.
A Mad Max/Waterworld mash-up franchise?
This is the thing that always mystifies me about billionaire fantasies of islands and giant bunkers. Where are they getting food from? What about spare parts when things break? You still need agriculture and manufacturing to live a modern life, none of which exist on private islands or bunkers.
When I saw this render, my first thought was “oh good- they’ll be easy to starve out when the revolution comes”. If the rich keep locking themselves in bunkers (barricade the door from the outside) and building ridiculous islands, we won’t even need guilltoines.
I love that it appears that all of the minion accommodations have no views onto houses. Either in wells or into courtyards.
Landlord of the Flies!
If I were looking for a billionaire enclave to John Gault in, I’d want it to be far from the sea, and probably more along the lines of a self-sustaining community that doesn’t allow any billionaires in.
Oh God I completely forgot about that and I had been up to season 2 that show is really fucked up really really really fucked up
Also this article is the billionth time I’ve seen artist CG renderings of artificial Islands built for people to live at sea and I have seen absolutely zero examples of real life action.
This shit is just artistic grad students fucking around at the end of every semester because it looks cool but no one ever actually ends up doing it.
It’s so commonplace that the second I saw hexagonal shapes joined it was like an architectural cliche because that’s always what they look like, because, “ooh! tiled hexagons! techy!”
I give it another couple weeks and then someone else will publish an article talking about how someone is going to build an artificial Island and there is over an 80% chance the graphics will use tiled hexagon Islands just like this
It’s become a thing that’s predictable and tired at this point.
Someone needs to just go make the fucking thing already and stop hiring art students
None of the illustrations show the “160-foot walls” that will “dwarf the ocean’s biggest waves,” in addition to blocking the view for everyone.
I also don’t see the renewable energy sources, unless they’re considering wave energy, which seems unlikely as they would want this island to be parked where waves are smaller for the comfort of residents.
Where does the fresh water come from?
I would like to that for 20k you get a rack, like in the Navy. Hopefuly, it isn’t just an 8 hour timeshare. After all, the “help” has to sleep somewhere. All the better when you can make them pay for the privilege. Even better is when you can use that up-front cost to force them into debt-peonage.
Not pictured, machinery island is somewhere off to the north. I’m waiting for the coal baron to buy into the place and force a switch to “clean coal”. They can even pipe in a live feed of a horde of workings endlessly shoveling coal into boilers for their “betters”
Hey, they can employ children as coal shovelers for all I care, as long as the monorail keeps running on time
Stop it! You’re making Elon Musk salivate.
Will this be the end of SpaceX? Is pederasty legal in international waters?
How would you fit a window here? The architects have more important things to do anyway.
And welcome to BoingBoing!
My brain went to Brink ( Brink (video game) - Wikipedia )
Get as many of the billionaires to whom this kind of thing appeals on there as possible, maybe for some kind of ‘grand ball’.
Then withdraw the staff and cut off supplies and let them live their libertarian meritocracy until there are only a couple left.
The Overfed Games.
Especially when it looks so obviously like a prison - or a fortress. Which I guess is what it is…
I lol’d at Overfed Games
