Tomorrow when the farm boys find this
freak of nature, they will wrap his body
in newspaper and carry him to the museum.
But tonight he is alive and in the north
field with his mother. It is a perfect
summer evening: the moon rising over
the orchard, the wind in the grass. And
as he stares into the sky, there are
twice as many stars as usual.

Back in the late 60’s we were driving on a back road near the Delaware water gap and we came upon a farm with a sign: “Two headed cow - $100 if not alive”. Indeed, there it was: both heads active. The guy there said that one head could be awake while the other slept. He also had a couple of 6 legged dogs and cats. He said that he had been rescuing animals like this for many years. He really cared about them. It was a sweet scene.
