Grocery stores here still use those. It’s less wasteful than it seems because the cold air sits at the bottom. It’s why deep freezers have a chest format. Opening a door on top doesn’t let out appreciable cold air, and warm air can’t really get in. When you open your fridge door, it’s a lot worse. All the cold air immediately falls out the bottom of the door because there’s nothing to hold it in.

Keep in mind that with the big standup freezers, the entire back of it is open to a warehouse or room. There’s a huge air space behind them being constantly chilled to freezing temperatures. That is wasteful.

I remember playing with those ubiquitous plastic pantyhose Easter egg things! Didn’t know they were sold at the grocery store

That was actually part of the point: instead of going to a department store or a lingerie store, you could pick up cheap, serviceable nylons and knee-highs as part of your grocery run.
