More respect for the women here, seeing as you’ve had well over 30 years to learn.
Yeah, and I keep screwing up my apology. And I cannot see your anger, I thought you were being light-humoured as well.
I am sorry. You didn’t, don’t deserve condescension. I was oblivious.
You made the claim that the bands you listed were not mainstream. Well, they are - they all had record contracts. What they’re not is “pop”, which the focus of this topic.
Next time, just reply to the person who you offended directly and say that you’re sorry - not extended explanations are needed. We all fuck up and say stupid shit, and most times just saying your sorry is enough. That’s literally all I wanted. It’s not rocket surgery.
But thank you.
“ARE YOU JEALOUS?!”
<Body seems unclear, is it a complete sentence?>
Er, yes?
I was just talking about my experience of different corners of 80s pop culture (which it all was, regardless of which sold more or less) which were different from this collection which was being used as blanket proof that the 80s just plain sucked. That was the point being made, not whether those specific bands count as “pop” or “mainstream” or not (which kind of a nit-picky distinction).
Heh, same birth year and same outlook here. Def seems continual decline since
As an aside, a while back i looked up a lot of 90’s dance music i loved as a teenager on youtube. still love the music but holy crap the music videos for them have not aged well! Legendarily terrible!
@failquail and @vrplumber… it’s not your faults…
Yeah… lots of 90s videos were kind of sameish… lots of them were kind of like this!
Hm…
Maybe not all, tho…
I actually really like all those videos…
Man, I’m late to this party. Apologies if I’m repeating what’s come before.
The 80s gave us this little slice of awesome:
And this:
Therefore your premise is invalid.
One of Bill Paxton’s lesser known acting credits
Most everything in as much of that video as I could stand to watch did suck, except the B-52s, Robert Smith and Robocop.
It was just like now, crap shoved down your throat to keep you distracted while they take more and more. All the good stuff was and is counterculture and these “awesome80’s” things are just what was the popular garbage. People say “music was better in the 80’s” and I’m thinking of Yazoo and New Order, but they mean Phil Collins and Journey! It’s shit!
My 80’s was more like:
Etc. Not to mention the hip-hop and hardcore scenes others have touched on already.
The 80’s did suck, but that’s why there was so much fucking awesome music.
ETA some words to just a long list of videos
Hope the playlist included Pigbag. You are right there was always a niche.
I recognise fewer than a quarter of those acts.
God I was square.
The stuff you cite is what I consider the real 80s though; we can’t just sit back and let the perception (whether with disdain, or bizarrely, fondness) just be of Huey Lewis or Bon Jovi or suchlike sludge.
People who liked music you didn’t like were real people too. It’s all the “real 80s”, not just what you think is the real 80s… cutting any of it out is a real disservice to our understanding of the past.
…other people like whatever kind of entertainment they like, because it’s really not such a big deal?
Noted.
Sure if you select the best music and film, I totally agree and that’s smart. I’m suggesting though that sampled “correctly” (Say, from a uniform distribution over estate sale digs, for example), the 70s has a lot of terrible garage that cannot be forgiven.
Yeah man they choose 11 things from the 70s to make it look good, then put that up against a video of 80s stuff that was full of great stuff. Fucking Prince was on there. Ghostbusters. Sledgehammer, Cheers, Alf, Cindi Lauper, ET, Take on Me, Leslie Nielsen, Boy George, Balki Bartokomous, Freddie, Bruce, Fine Young Cannibals, Back to the Future, George Michael – is that 11 yet? I’m not even halfway through.
