I recall in the early 80’s there was a camaraderie among kids at hardcore shows. They still had an “us-vs-them” mentality towards people outside “the scene”, probably from always getting harassed by non-punks. While there were rare occasions where some guy or group of guys were sadistic in the pit, most of the time it was accepted that this was still just a dance, not a melee.
