As far as I’m aware there isn’t any law against me starting a sports team called the Kentucky Negroes or the Cincinnati Chinamen. But I’d still have to be a pretty racially insensitive asshole to do so.
But we can do that because we fought and won (with much real blood shed) control of the political power in this country. Granted most probably don’t think in terms of “Irish Catholic” in the voting booth anymore (though I’m sure there are plenty of places in the northeast where that still counts for a lot). But being able to piss on that epithet comes from the very definition of privilege, not because we are a plucky, downtrodden, minority. Never forget that it was an ugly, bloody, no-holds-barred, fight that got us here. I am not guilty of any of the murders or political corruption in that history, but I recognize that I still benefit from it by virtue of my skin and last name. It’s easy to live the conqueror’s life.
It would need to be the drunk micks and it would need to involve a mascot beating his wife? And potatoes…?
Which is exactly what’s going on… so what’s the problem?
WOW! GOLD STAR FOR THE SOCIAL STUDIES MAJOR!!!
Does our constitution guarantee you the right to not hear an offensive word? Or course not. Do you really think you are some minority of people on this thread that understand that? I would assume that most understand that it’s not a RIGHT.
Ah, the real meat of the matter. OK, good, you’ve made your position abundantly clear. You are without empathy or compassion. Good for you, I guess you see that as being “tough” or a “realist”. But really it just makes you an asshole. Or maybe your lack of empathy is not a choice due to weakness but you physically lack the ability to have empathy. Then I apologize, that is a medical condition. Not sure if medicine has a treatment for that, but drugs like MDMA are promising in that area. Let’s hope you are not completely pathological and a few doses of MDMA can push you in the right direction.

Starchiest sports rivalry ever…
Or Red Mesa Redskins, for that matter. So we’ve established that you feel the Navajo nation is comprised of “pretty racially insensitive assholes” and you support their right to call their high school football team Redskins while simultaneously being outraged that somebody else calls their team Redskins.
Okay, I guess I wasn’t clear. I’m disinterested on the subject of the name of the Washington NFL franchise. I am interested in how folks can support a Navajo high school calling themselves Redskins while simultaneously believing that the term Redskins is derogatory and its use as a mascot name is beyond the pale. Does that clear up your confusion?
Let’s say there are two people – a big ol’ bruiser, and a little guy wearing glasses.
For weeks, the big guy hits the little guy in the back of the head, takes his lunch-money, throws his books in the snow, pees on his gym-clothes, calls him a geek, burns down his house, rapes his mom, guts his dog, kills the rest of his family, and makes him live out back behind the tennis courts where the grass died off from paraquat.
One day the little guy shows up wearing a t-shirt that says “I’m a geek” and pastes the bully right in the nose.
Wait, there are three people, becasue @Grunschev is standing to the side going “Aren’t these the same things? The big guy is obviously justified if the little guy is doing it, too.”
Does that clear up your confusion?
No, it’s still unclear. Are you saying that the NFL Redskins are hitting Native Americans on the back of the head, taking their lunch money, throwing their books in the snow, peeing on their gym clothes and calling them names? And that the Red Mesa high school kids are doing these things to themselves? If the NFL team, simply by using the name Redskins, is doing damage, aren’t the Red Mesa Redskins doing the same thing? Or are you saying it’s okay for you to rape your mom, and gut your dog but it’s bad for someone else to do it? That doesn’t sound at all right to me.
Brainspore tells me context is everything. That it’s okay for black kids to call each other nigga and for Jews to tell Jewish jokes. I see that these things happen and they don’t terribly upset me. I don’t like hearing black kids call each other nigga, but so it goes. He goes on to point out the NAACP (colored persons) and UNCF (negro) and says that because these are self-referential that they’re okay.
He seems to be saying, and you seem to agree, that if, say, Deion Sanders (a black man) bought the Redskins and renamed them Niggers, there wouldn’t be the same outrage we’re hearing about the Washington Redskins because it’s self referential (i.e. the owner is black, most of the team is black). Is that really what you’re saying? Can you provide an example of any team, anywhere in the USA, that calls themselves something like Negroes, Niggers, Hymies, Micks, or Spicks? If there are such teams, don’t you think there would be more (should be more) public outrage expressed than we’re seeing for the Washington Redskins?
I just can’t imagine anyone buying a jersey or hat to support the Compton Niggers. Yet I’m pretty sure kids at Red Mesa HS wear hats or shirts with their mascot to show their school pride, so I can imagine that. If there was a Compton Niggers, would you support that name, or be against it? Maybe it’s just me, but I’d be against it.
Clearly, I just don’t get it. I mean, Brainspore couldn’t even bring himself to type the word “nigger”. Maybe there would be more outrage if redskin had the same cultural freight as nigger such that people couldn’t bring themselves to type it out and use “the R word” instead. Perhaps you and Brainspore feel Redskins is fundamentally different than Niggers. If so, doesn’t that undermine the case folks are making wrt the Washington Redskins?
Notre Dame’s The Fighting Irish, as has been well-established to death elsewhere, is named after an epithet for… the Irish.
what is this i don’t even
I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume that you were genuinely confused and looking to dialogue.
I didn’t feel it was necessary to, given the context. But kudos to you for being so fearless in the face of oppression and adversity.
It’s really very simple to fix. They can remain the redskins by simply making their logo a potato. Slap the potato logos on the sides of their helmets and still call them the redskins!
http://goo.gl/nw0hFu -plenty of potato images to fuel the fire.
My vote is still to change it to the Washington Bribes
Amen, so many white, and “Internet Indian” creeps.
What a surprise, the racist trolls didn’t respond to your question.
Do you and OtherMichael feel any irony at all? You’re only on the anti-Redskin side out of political correctness. Your entire argument that Red Mesa Redskins is okay and Washington Redskins isn’t is … racist. Your continue to argue that person A can do something person B cannot simply because of their race, and not just with Redskins, but a list of other cases. That’s pretty much a definition of racist, isn’t it?
Well, @Grunschev was suspended for “Continued use of racist slurs”, despite the fact that it was apparent that their use of these words was rhetorical. So we will be hearing from them sometime in the Fall of 2015.
Yet people still seem to feel comfortable using the anti-Irish epithet, and seem to be able to do so with impunity, curious.
