I see what you did there.
That sounds like something a MutantCommieTraitor would say!

… OH GODS a book based on the game? ::goes and looks it up :: Oh, wait, it’s a module FOR that game. Hoo boy…
Well… there are these, if they can be found (about which I know nothing, btw):
Just adding to the chorus of “How cool!”. I read it myself literally days ago because the film was coming out and enjoyed it immensely, i thought it had the right balance of humour and pathos. Now i need the sequel because i had no idea there was one.
so. basically Moon?
Without going into details or spoilers*… only kinda. It’s a much more complex setup with a bigger case of characters and it’s very different tonally.
*Though I guess even bringing up the comparison is a much bigger spoiler for Moon than for this book/movie.
I would have to say, other than involving clones, no.
Did you say expendables clones in space?
I really love Moon and the trailer for this movie does make it seem like the focus of the story is quite different, despite having some common elements. Tonally it also seems very different.
Just to clear the air, i asked Ed about this. He said he has heard the comparisons a million times now, and had never heard of the movie prior to that. Disposable clones in space could as easily link it to Star Wars, honestly. No, without going into spoilers, it is a very, very different kind of story.
Yeah to me based on the trailer alone this reads more like a fun space romp with clone shenanigans. I’m here for it
Oh. My. Lord.
Just you wait, if you haven’t read it yet. Oh my…
Thanks for noting that. From the description in Rob’s post, the premise is almost exactly the same as Moon. How the new version of this situation is resolved will be key.
ETA I am in no way implying any plagiarism. Future space corporations using clones who don’t yet know they are clones and only find out when a second one appears is almost a trope. It is how the trope is handled that makes the difference.
FETA @gatto Yeah, so I relied on the text description, didn’t see the trailer. The words “When a mistake results in two being alive at once” were the key ones for me.
in the trailer at least, it’s very obvious the protagonist signed up for what’s happening. that’s the opposite of moon, so they really have to be fundamentally different stories.
Mickey knows he’s an expendable clone (“Expendable” is his literal job title) and part of his job is to get regular memory backups so each new iteration retains as many of the previous one’s experiences as possible. They even cover that in the trailer. So the questions of identity and morality are fundamentally different in his case (the “Ship of Theseus” is referenced regularly).
As noted the character in this new movie seems to have signed up for the deal, and it’s a comedy that should have a whole different vibe. But you’re right, that basic premise has been showing up a lot in shows like Archer, Rick & Morty, Marvel films and comics, even Star Trek a few times. At least it isn’t yet-another time-travel sci fi movie.
Time travel is so yesterday. Permissive cloning is going to be everywhere.
At least that’s the plan.
