Truck-eating bridge devours speeding victim

How much more yellow could it be? The answer is none. None more yellow.

IDK man, I’ve seen some pretty yellow things in my day.

When I looked at Google Maps it appears that the Peabody St (i.e. parallel to the bridge) doesn’t go far in either direction. From Gregson, Peabody (or Peabody via Duke, where it stops) will put you back onto Main, the next parallel street, in either direction. I have to assume there’s some reason they can’t direct all trucks (incl. local deliveries) from Gregson onto Main and then, if they need to go there, onto Peabody. (I get that Duke St is one-way in the other direction, so they can’t get onto Peabody from there, but they could presumably get back out that way)

If so, they could put a soft clearance a block out, because then there’s no reason for a truck to go any farther down Gregson, even if they otherwise know what they’re doing. I have to guess this has already been rejected for some reason.

It’s been a while since I’ve been back there, but IIRC, there are a LOT of little shops and such along that way, and the only surface-level RR crossings are either well to the NW or SE of that area. You can’t just cut over a couple of streets and solve the clearance problem.

I don’t mean to cross, I mean say “no trucks period” as of Main St. If they need to pickup or deliver on Peabody, turn right on Main and then left on Peabody.

When they’re done on Peabody, they can then proceed to make a right turn into the low-clearance underpass. (Joking)

Oh, right. That’s because trucks can’t do the left turn from Main onto Peabody. It’s a tight angle and a narrow street.

True, but it looks like this would be a much easier intersection to fix:

If the city bought a portion of that parking lot, they could straighten out the end of Peabody St, and for not a tremendously high amount of money, I would think.

That doesn’t solve the low-clearance bridge issue. It just creates a work-around that makes installing a soft-warning barrier less annoying for local delivery trucks going to Peabody.

If a big fix isn’t feasible, a combination of small fixes sounds good to me!

The other thing is, if overheight vehicles are running the yellow lights, then move that sensor further out so that there’s time to safely get the light red before they arrive! This one seems like a major “duh” to me.

The sensor is already just southwest of Main & Gregson. If they move it any farther back, it will be on the other side of the intersection and cause sudden red lights at the bridge due to the local delivery trucks you just opened up Peabody for as they turn right on Main…

And I would bet money that idiots still hit that bridge.

Yeah, I bet somebody would, but we’ll never know.

The whole area is sacrosanct, untouchable, complete-in-itself. It’s like a pothole ordained by a higher power. There is an objection for every timid suggestion. We will have funny videos forever.
