Truck has 480,000 lumen light panel installed on it

That’s cool! No clue why he did it, but it looks cool just to see what can be done.

Deploy large mylar mirror…

Search and Rescue was suggested above.

Other than that?

Why is global climate change a thing? Shit like this (oversimplifying of course, but this doesn’t help matters).

I don’t mind people attempting things like this to see what it’d be like, but when 100+ yahoos consider this an instruction manual that they “need” to do, now we’ve got a bigger issue.

Yup.

“Pimp my ______”(insert noun that most certainly does not need to be pimped).

Multiply this by the number of people with more money than sense. Anyone with self restraint is rendered irrelevant in the flood of carbon-releasing world record attempts.

Yeah, this will stop when its no longer physically possible to continue.

+1 on LED lights being blinding. Maybe there is no regulation on the lumens for headlamps? It feels like there should be they are distracting

Isn’t one of the tech solutions to… slow down?

Oversimplifying and completely wrong. All of the people doing DIY shot like this in the world are a tiny drop on the bucket. Climate change is driven by structural problems with how we make energy, and how we make things like steel and concrete.

This is exactly what happened during the SF Bay Area “safety” power shutoffs. Everyone got out their Honda generators…

Not really. Even if the car was sitting still, a running deer would cause a lot of damage. I had a co-worker who hit one, and while waiting for help, another one ran into his car. The insurance adjuster kept asking him silly questions about how that was possible and the deer’s motivation for hitting a stationary car. He really made us laugh with possible reasons, like they were racing each other and one was in the lead. The best was when he said, “I don’t know why - maybe it wanted revenge for the first one.”

My scariest encounter with deer happened because I tried a shortcut between two highways. That road crossed through a huge field that was full of deer. They were all just grazing and walking around - and I was terrified. From time to time, the sound of my car caused some to lift their heads and turn in my direction.

I crawled along at about 5 mph, and after several minutes (seemed like hours) I reached civilization a paved road. My hands were messed up for a bit, because I’d been gripping the wheel so tightly my nails left marks in my palms. If that herd had trampled my car while crossing from one side of the field to the other, I probably wouldn’t be here today. I was already startling them just by being there. If I’d gone faster I would’ve left the area a lot sooner. If they’d starting running, I’m not sure what would’ve helped, because they had me completely surrounded.

Illegitimate functions are fun too!

As are high beams, but most people seem to be able to use them just fine.

Lots of things are potentially dangerous but perfectly safe if used responsibly.

And on a sidenote, this light is very thoroughly amazing! If only for taking a technology to it’s absolute most extreme use. Just from a tech perspective it’s awesome, but I can imagine lots of more practical uses too.

I’m pretty sure this d bag was behind me on my drive home from work this morning.

jesus christ, why can’t someone do neat shit without a pile of negative nancy’s saying how a big light running for a few hours a month is going to melt the ice caps or how he requires a ‘real’ need to make this for some ‘redeeming’ quality?

what happened to neat shit for the sake of neat shit? on boing boing of all fucking places.

So it’s a 4kw array that uses 5kw? Sorry to nit pick the details, but in my experience people trying to push LEDs always seem to be loose with the facts.
Even if it’s a 4kw array they must be super special, very expensive not widely available LEDs to be putting out 120 lumens per watt. The best commonly available LEDs put out less than 100 lumens per watt.
Decent 1000 watt high pressure sodium bulbs do almost 130 lumens per watt. HPS bulbs also put out light across the spectrum albeit heavy in the yellow. LEDs are monochromatic. A varied spectrum is incredibly helpful to the human eye for definition.
He could have done better strapping four 1000w high pressure sodium grow lights to the truck.
I have real world experience with HID (High intensity discharge) vs LEDs in the fishing industry. For around a decade LED salesmen have been trying to sell us 400 watt led bars that are claimed to be better than the 1000w HPS lights we use for crabbing and squidding, except they aren’t. As soon as you start to talk to them about watts per lumen and spectrum they have nothing but a mouth full of teeth.
