Yeah, I’m sure Obama loudly and publicly declaring that Russia was covertly trying to help Trump win the election would have gone down just GREAT with the Republicans in 2016. Certainly no one would have claimed he was slandering Trump to help get Hillary elected.

Espectially when McConnel explicitly told Trump he would weaponize any announcement of what Russia was doing as a political ploy and rally the republican base:

So they were illegally hacking the company at the same time as the pre-trial process? American Justice. (They eventually dropped the charges because they had no evidence.)
While Biff didn’t characterise this as a “Deep State plot against an innocent Russian company”, the spectacle of a U.S. “president” exposing classified information about an operation against a Russian psyops outfit should be gratifying enough for the ex-KGB thug who’s his handler.

The US DOJ clearly never expected a defence. I can just see the chief prosecutor saying’ " there’s a WHAT? a defendent?".
