Totally agree. A major corporation came to this arrangement in merely a few weeks? Nope.
And we’re talking Indiana here (Pence’s state), not some random place. They wouldn’t have any reason to want the new administration to look good, would they? /s
My guess is Carrier is going to receive millions in tax breaks and other “special” economic incentives to keep these jobs in Indiana on a ‘temporary’ basis.
Essentially the government will be subsidizing these jobs for a couple of years so Trump and Pence can make political hay out of saving manufacturing jobs. Basic Keynesian economic theory.
Guaranteed that these jobs will still end up in Mexico within 5 years. The swamp just gets deeper.
I think what actually happened is that the mainstream democrats abandoned the anti-war movement. There was always a solid anti-war movement that had little to do with the democrats.
I finally found a forum that leans really right and, yeah, there’s skepticism about him out there in the conversations. The only real glee seems to be from the white supremacists, and while I think a lot of his voters had proclivities that way, I think seeing the KKK erupting in joy is making them rethink who they are a bit. I hope so.
This. I feel like the Democratic Party is completely separate from my beliefs, and the feeling is mutual.
The one good thing about a Trump presidency is that nobody to the left of him will complacently accept everything he does. There will be resistance every step of the way from the left. Also things will be obviously broken, rather than subtly but critically broken like they are now.
I’ve seen one suggestion that this will prompt other companies to threaten to move, so they can wring tax breaks and/or other incentives out of it. But I guess this is how it goes anyway…
It may have backfired on Boeing; WTO is looking at them for all the incentives (i.e. subsidies) they received for keeping the 777X in Washington State. (This leads me to think they may not stick around there, next time.)
Tax breaks for corporations is one of the foundations of our current political system so I don’t expect that to change anytime soon. Trump’s $1T infrastructure plan is a case study in government handouts to construction firms and the privatization of public assets.
The Boeing vs. Airbus issue gets really sticky since both of them are accusing each other of violating WTO rules about government subsidies. It’s essentially a proxy trade war between the EU and US. Boeing has already outsourced most of the manufacturing processes already - all that’s left is basically just assembly so the end product can be slapped with a “Made in USA” sticker. Airbus does this too however much of it’s manufacturing is still being done within EU countries.
Please don’t worry about it. These are horrible times we’re in. Trump and Pence are horrible both. And it feels like all the progress we’ve made is slipping through our fingers.
