Hey, are we finally learning not to get involved directly in South American coups?
It’s also oil sand which can be a bitch to get out. But also note - they didn’t support the coup. The whole “imperialist oil grab narrative” isn’t exactly accurate either.
But no, the US cares less about democracy and more about stability. We will deal with dictators if they play ball.

Trump has been almost continuously talking about invading Venezuela as well. It doesn’t seem like a negative response from his staff and every other South American leader - including the anti-Maduro crowd - has dampened his enthusiasm for the idea, since he keeps bringing it up, both before this coup consideration and very recently.
