I remember when California was “that state.” I lived in Florida for five years, and one of the main reasons I left was the craziness. And, well, now I live in California, which is relatively sane these days.
Kind of reminds me of the time I was asked to allow my purse to be checked. When the TSA agent opened it, she started laughing. I had a couple of handfuls of Hershey Miniatures that I had grabbed as a snack. When it went through the x-ray machine, they looked like they might be explosives.
TSA Security Thinking:
Airplanes are dense acumulations of humans that make them a good target for IED shrapnel or a maniac with a firearm. To protect them we will create a dense acumulation of humans closer to the curb.
The item was neither dangerous nor illegal.
You just hit the nail on the head. We hire tens of thousands of people that know nothing about physical security to run physical security. We don’t train them in even the most fundamental skills needed for real security and there is a good reason for that. The TSA’s job is not security, it is comfort. They are there to make flyers feel safe so that air travel did not collapse post 911. Period. This is why an agency with a documented 95% failiure rate goes through no major restructuring. This is all elementary now though since the green new deal will eliminate air travel.
