In the Southwest, we refer to these as dust devils. Usually they just get dust in them, but sometimes there’s a reward. It’s fun when they pick up metallic garbage and fling it across power lines.

I just learned the other day - something we associate so closely with the West - is an invasive species that didn’t even exist in the US until ~ the mid 1800s. Probably from seeds stuck in with Russian wheat.
