What only Tumblr seems to understand is, we like naughty images, and if they aren’t banned, they aren’t naughty. This is why lady nipples are bad, but man nipples are… not bad, but boring. Where’s the fun of finding, at last, an anatomical illustration with no sexual overtones? Where is the delicious shame?

Pictures of Femen activists are a bit of a borderline case, of course, because a lot of people find the idea of shirtless ladies battling oppression pretty damn sexy, and there’s a risk that even their serious, newsworthy nipples might inadvertently trigger feelings of pleasure and enjoyment. We get around that by reasoning that their cause is so irredeemably fucked, that the misogyny they are protesting against is so inextricably embedded in all current societies, that the sight of their nipples is likely to make sensitive viewers feel profoundly depressed, if not actually suicidal. Ultimately, our goal is to show only nipples that have the potential to cause anxiety or despair, as part of a larger plan to make the whole platform as unpleasant to use as possible.”
The spokesperson declined to elaborate on Tumblr’s future plans, but did say that once the platform had been purged of anything that might possibly lead to sexual arousal, Tumblr would be taking “a long hard look” at other areas of the service to identify any more aspects that might need to be eliminated. “We’ve got a vibrant, thriving user community here,” he said. “We aim to change all that.”
